Motivation: Clear the Clutter, Clear Your Mind

What if creating a healthier mind started with cleaning out a closet?

In this week’s Motivation, Dr. Palermo reminds us that decluttering isn’t just about organizing our homes it’s about creating space for greater clarity, focus, and peace of mind.

As part of Thrive’s Summer Challenge, we’re inviting you to take a fresh look at your living space and let go of the things you no longer use. Those items may be taking up more than physical space; they may also be contributing to mental clutter.

Why Clutter Affects More Than Your Home

Our surroundings have a powerful influence on how we feel.

When countertops are covered, closets are overflowing, or papers pile up, our brains are constantly processing that visual information. Over time, clutter can make it harder to concentrate, increase feelings of stress, and leave us feeling mentally drained.

An organized environment, on the other hand, often promotes a greater sense of calm, control, and focus.

Decluttering isn’t about creating a picture-perfect home. It’s about creating an environment that supports your well-being.

Small Changes Make a Big Difference

You don’t have to organize your entire house in one weekend.

Instead, choose one small area to tackle:

  • A kitchen drawer
  • Your closet
  • A bathroom cabinet
  • Your desk
  • A bookshelf
  • The garage or storage room

Even 15 to 20 minutes of focused decluttering can create noticeable momentum and make the next step feel easier.

Give Your Unused Items a Second Life

As you sort through your belongings, set aside items you no longer use or need.

Rather than letting them continue to collect dust, consider donating them to a local nonprofit, shelter, or community organization where they can benefit someone else.

Decluttering becomes even more meaningful when your unused items become valuable resources for another person or family.

The Wellness Benefits of Decluttering

Creating a more organized environment may help:

  • Reduce stress and mental overwhelm
  • Improve focus and productivity
  • Make daily routines feel easier
  • Create a greater sense of calm
  • Encourage mindfulness and intentional living

Just as we care for our physical health through movement and nutrition, caring for our environment can positively influence our emotional well-being.

Your Summer Challenge

This week, choose one area of your home to declutter.

Set aside items you no longer need, donate what you can, and enjoy the feeling of creating a little more space—not just in your home, but in your mind.

You may be surprised by how freeing it feels.

Sometimes making room for what matters begins by letting go of what no longer serves you.
