Toxins and Fish: Safe Food Guidelines

Fish and Toxins: Safe Food Guidelines One of the healthiest food choices we can make is to eat fish. Besides a source of low-fat and high-quality protein, it is a rich source of vital nutrients such as vitamin D---a nutrient that many people are deficient in.  Fish is also rich in calcium and phosphorus, as well as other minerals such as iron, zinc, iodine, magnesium, and potassium.   Fatty types of fish are considered the healthiest because they are particularly good sources of vitamin D as well as omega-3 fatty acids.  Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for your body and brain to function optimally and are strongly linked to a reduced risk of many diseases.   Unfortunately, environmental pollutants such as dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can accumulate in foods, including...

Mental disease is at epidemic levels in the US. Over 16million Americans suffer from depression and more than...

Artificial Sweeteners, Obesity and Diabetes

Artificial Sweeteners, Obesity and Diabetes From DrMirkin.com  Virtually all scientists agree that North Americans need to reduce their intake of sugar. But their views on artificial sweeteners are not as clear. Increasing evidence is showing that artificial sweeteners are not good substitutes for sugar. In a new study, people who took sucralose (an artificial sweetener) for just one week developed signs of insulin resistance and diabetes, such as: • increased cellular sugar uptake, • increased fat formation, • signs of inflammation and • higher rises in insulin and triglycerides. The overweight people in the study developed the highest rises in these markers of diabetes (The Endocrine Society's annual meeting, March 20, 2018, Abstract SUN-071). The higher the dose of sucralose, the higher the rise in the markers of risk for diabetes. This study...

Toxic Beauty

By Nancy Palermo MD Putting on makeup shouldn’t be like playing with matches. The average woman may place 15-20 beauty products on herself, exposing her body to up to 170 different ingredients daily. Recent studies suggest we may acquire more toxins through skin absorption and inhalation than through the food we eat. This raises new interest in many beauty care products known to contain potential toxic and carcinogenic chemicals. There is growing interest among consumers to eat organic foods free of processing and pesticides, yet they appear to be ignoring the impact of their personal care products on their health and well-being. The skin is the body’s largest organ so there is more surface area to absorb synthetic, toxic chemicals. Incidentally many beauty care products are designed to...
