Healthy Guacamole with Cumin, Cilantro & Lime

Guacamole with Toasted Cumin

As temperatures warm up, we naturally gravitate toward the outdoors and fresh, simple recipes that come together quickly. This Thrive original guacamole brings a subtle twist with toasted cumin, adding depth and warmth to a classic favorite.

It’s bright, flavorful, and perfect for spring and summer gatherings, whether served as a dip, spread, or topping.

Ingredients

  • 4 Hass avocados
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro
  • 1 jalapeño
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon toasted cumin seeds
  • Juice of 2 limes

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Spread cumin seeds on a small baking sheet and toast for about 10 minutes until fragrant.
  2. Add tomato, onion, cilantro, jalapeño, salt, pepper, toasted cumin, and lime juice to a food processor or blender.
    Pulse until finely chopped.
  3. Scoop avocado into a bowl and gently fold in the blended mixture. Mix until just combined, keeping some texture.
  4. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve immediately.

Thrive Tips

  • Toasted cumin adds a subtle smoky depth; don’t skip this step.
  • For more heat, leave some seeds in the jalapeño.
  • Add diced mango or pineapple for a fresh, sweet contrast.
  • Store with plastic wrap pressed directly on the surface to reduce browning.

Serving Ideas

Serve with fresh vegetables, whole-grain chips, or as a topping for grilled fish, chicken, or tacos.
Also works well as a spread for wraps and bowls.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does toasted cumin add to guacamole?

Toasted cumin adds a subtle, smoky, earthy depth that enhances the overall flavor of the guacamole without overpowering its freshness.

How do you keep guacamole from turning brown?

To prevent browning, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole to limit air exposure and store it in the refrigerator.

Can I make guacamole ahead of time?

Yes. Guacamole can be made a few hours in advance. Store it tightly covered in the refrigerator and stir before serving.

What can I serve with guacamole besides chips?

Guacamole pairs well with fresh vegetables, grilled chicken, fish, tacos, grain bowls, or as a spread for wraps and sandwiches.

Can I adjust the spice level?

Absolutely. Remove the seeds from the jalapeño for less heat, or leave them in for a spicier version.
