We are consciously aware of only a small portion of what the mind-body system is processing. Much of our behavior is shaped by automatic, subconscious patterns.

This is one of the key ideas behind mind-body healing. The body is constantly responding to signals beneath the surface: stress, breath patterns, emotional memory, muscle tension, digestive reactivity, and whether the nervous system feels safe or threatened.

That is why practices such as hypnosis, mindfulness, and Qi Gong can be so helpful. They do not simply ask us to “think positive.” They help the nervous system experience calm, safety, and regulation.

The Gut-Brain Connection

The gut and brain are in constant communication. This is especially important with conditions such as IBS, where the digestive system can become highly sensitive to stress and nervous system activation. This is mostly controlled by the Vagus nerve and the parasympathetic system.

This does not mean symptoms are “all in your head.” It means the brain, gut, immune system, emotions, and stress response are deeply connected.

For people dealing with IBS, Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, reflux, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or other chronic digestive issues, a mind-body approach may help support better regulation, resilience, and comfort. Of course, these practices should work alongside proper medical care, testing, nutrition, and treatment. For example, celiac disease still requires a strict gluten-free diet, and inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s require appropriate medical management.

Hypnosis: Working With Deeper Patterns

Clinical hypnosis is a relaxed, focused state in which the mind becomes more receptive to positive therapeutic suggestions. In gut-directed hypnotherapy, imagery and suggestion may be used to help calm and regulate the digestive system.

As a  Clinical Hypnotherapist,  Dr. Greenapple, along with his other integrative health training, sees hypnosis as a gentle bridge between the conscious mind and the body’s deeper automatic patterns. It is not about losing control. It is about helping the body and mind reconnect in a healthier way.

Mindfulness: Changing Our Relationship With Symptoms

Mindfulness helps us observe what is happening in the body without immediately reacting with fear or resistance.

With chronic digestive or inflammatory conditions, symptoms can create anxiety, anticipation, and tension. Mindfulness gives us a way to pause, breathe, soften, and respond with more awareness. It may not “cure” a condition, but it can change how the nervous system responds to it. Learning how to be comfortable while being uncomfortable. 

Qi Gong: Meditation in Motion

Qi Gong combines slow movement, breath, posture, and awareness. It is often described as meditation in motion.

For people who find sitting meditation difficult, Qi Gong offers a gentle way to calm the mind, move the body, and regulate the nervous system. From both a traditional Chinese medicine and modern mind-body perspective, slow breathing and mindful movement can support digestion, relaxation, circulation, and emotional balance.

A Whole-Person Approach

Many chronic health conditions are influenced by more than one factor: inflammation, stress, diet, sleep, immune function, trauma history, movement, and emotional resilience.

Hypnosis, mindfulness, and Qi Gong do not replace medical care. They support the whole person.

When the nervous system settles, the breath changes.
When the breath changes, the gut often listens.
When the gut softens, the mind often feels safer.

Healing is not only about treating symptoms. It is also about helping the body remember what balance, safety, and regulation feel like.
