Protecting Your Skin Starts Today

As we head into June and spend more time outdoors, it’s a great opportunity to focus on skin cancer awareness and the importance of protecting your skin every day—not just at the beach or pool.

In this week’s Motivation, Harlee Palmer, PA, discusses why sun protection matters and shares practical ways to help keep your skin healthy year-round.

Why Skin Protection Matters

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation remains one of the most significant risk factors. The good news is that many cases can be prevented through simple, consistent habits.

While a sunburn may fade after a few days, the damage from UV exposure can accumulate over time, contributing to premature aging, sunspots, and an increased risk of skin cancer.

That’s why protecting your skin isn’t just a summer habit; it’s a lifelong investment in your health.

Daily Sunscreen: One of the Simplest Health Habits

One of the most effective things you can do for your skin is wear sunscreen daily.

Harlee recommends:

  • Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher
  • Applying sunscreen every morning, even on cloudy days
  • Reapplying every two hours when outdoors
  • Wearing protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses
  • Seeking shade during peak sun hours when possible

Consistent protection helps reduce cumulative sun damage and supports healthier skin over time.

Know Your Skin

In addition to prevention, regular skin checks are important.

Pay attention to:

  • New moles or spots
  • Changes in existing moles
  • Areas that itch, bleed, or do not heal properly
  • Changes in the color, shape, or size of skin lesions

Early detection remains one of the most effective tools in successfully treating skin cancer.

Small Habits, Long-Term Benefits

Like many aspects of health, skin protection is not about perfection; it’s about consistency.

Applying sunscreen each morning may seem like a small step, but over months and years, that habit can make a meaningful difference in your skin’s appearance, health, and resilience.

As we enter the summer season, let this be your reminder to make sun protection part of your daily routine.
