Motivation: Don’t Forget to Sun-Protect Your Eyes
When we think of sun protection, our minds immediately go to sunscreen and wide-brimmed hats, but what about your eyes?
Just like your skin, your eyes are vulnerable to UV damage. In fact, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can increase your risk of serious eye conditions, including:
- Cataracts – a clouding of the eye’s natural lens that can blur vision
- Macular Degeneration – damage to the retina’s central region, impacting sharp, central vision
- Photokeratitis – essentially a sunburn of the cornea, causing pain, redness, and temporary vision loss
UV damage is cumulative, meaning every unprotected exposure adds up over time. That’s why consistent protection is key, not just on sunny days, but even when it’s overcast, since UV rays can penetrate clouds and reflect off surfaces like water, sand, and pavement.
How to Protect Your Eyes
- Wear sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays (look for “UV 400” or “100% UV protection” on the label)
- Choose wraparound styles or larger frames to prevent light from sneaking in from the sides
- Add a hat a wide brim can block up to 50% more UV rays from reaching your eyes
- Avoid looking directly at the sun, even during sunrise or sunset
Thrive Tip:
Keep a pair of sunglasses in your car, your gym bag, and by the front door so you’re always ready to shield your eyes before heading outside.
Protecting your eyes is a simple but powerful step toward lifelong vision health. So next time you apply sunscreen, don’t forget to grab your shades and hat, too.
Stay healthy, stay protected—and see the world clearly.
