Motivation: How to Choose a Safe Sunscreen
Your guide to protecting your skin year-round
When it comes to skincare, sunscreen isn’t just a summer essential; it’s something we should be using every day, all year long. In this week’s Motivation, Dr. Fletcher breaks down what to look for (and what to avoid) when choosing a sunscreen that’s safe and effective.
Why Sunscreen Matters Year-Round
Even on cloudy days or during the cooler months, UV rays can still damage your skin. Daily sun protection helps prevent premature aging, sunburns, and lowers your risk of skin cancer.
Ingredients to Look For
When choosing a sunscreen, opt for mineral-based (also known as physical) sunscreens that use natural ingredients to block UV rays. Look for:
- Zinc oxide
- Titanium dioxide
These ingredients sit on the surface of your skin and reflect UV rays, making them a safer choice—especially for sensitive skin.
Ingredients to Avoid
Some chemical sunscreens contain ingredients that can irritate skin or pose health concerns. Try to avoid:
- Oxybenzone
- Octinoxate
- Homosalate
- Avobenzone (can degrade quickly in the sun)
These ingredients can be absorbed into the bloodstream and may cause allergic reactions or hormone disruption in some individuals.
Additional Tips
- Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.
- Reapply every 2 hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
- Don’t forget often-missed spots like ears, lips, and the tops of your feet.
Taking a few extra minutes each morning to apply the right sunscreen is one of the best things you can do for your long-term skin health.
