Take the Next Step: Thrive’s 1-Mile Summer Challenge

Running a mile can feel intimidating, especially if you haven’t run in years. But what if the goal wasn’t to run a perfect mile today?

What if the goal was simply to take the first step?

In this week’s Motivation, Dr. Palermo introduces Thrive’s next Summer Challenge: the 1-Mile Run.

Whether you run the entire mile or build up to it over time, this challenge is designed for every fitness level.

Start Where You Are

Fitness isn’t about comparing yourself to someone else’s journey. It’s about making progress from your own starting point.

If a full mile feels overwhelming, break it into smaller, achievable goals.

You might begin by:

  • Walking the entire mile
  • Alternating between walking and jogging
  • Dividing the mile into four shorter intervals
  • Gradually increasing your running time each week

The important thing isn’t your speed it’s your consistency.

Why Running Is Worth It

Whether you walk, jog, or run, moving your body regularly provides tremendous health benefits.

Building cardiovascular endurance may help:

  • Strengthen your heart and lungs
  • Improve energy throughout the day
  • Support healthy blood pressure
  • Boost mood and reduce stress
  • Improve endurance for everyday activities
  • Support long-term metabolic health

Every step contributes to a healthier body.

Progress Over Perfection

Many people believe they’re “not runners.”

The truth is that every runner started somewhere.

Walking becomes brisk walking.

Brisk walking becomes jogging.

Jogging becomes running.

Small improvements, repeated consistently, create remarkable progress over time.

Don’t focus on where you think you should be.

Celebrate where you are and where you’re headed.

Join the Thrive Summer Challenge

This challenge isn’t about finishing first.

It’s about building healthier habits, improving cardiovascular fitness, and discovering what you’re capable of.

Whether your first mile takes 10 minutes, 20 minutes, or longer, you’ve accomplished something worth celebrating.

The goal is simple:

Keep moving. Keep improving. Keep showing up.

Because every mile begins with a single step.
