Food Diversity can Help Optimize Health

Nancy A. Palermo MD As we begin to learn more about the impact of our gut health, we realize we may only be as healthy as our gut. Our gut microbiome, the microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa living in our digestive tract, appears to play a significant role in our metabolism, immune and neuroendocrine responses. Roles of the microbiome include nutrient and mineral absorption, synthesis of important enzymes, vitamins, and amino acids, and production of 70% of our neurotransmitters, like serotonin and melatonin. Our gut bacteria are also responsible for producing compounds called short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Science shows SCFAs are the drivers of gut health. One medium-sized apple contains less than 100 calories and up to 4 gm...

Americans gain an average of 5 -10 pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas and rarely lose this weight. The weight adds to the slow gain many experiences in...

Thriving through the Holidays: Gifts of Health, Wellness, and Generosity

The holiday season is marked by food, family and of course gifts. Gift-giving is not only a big contributor to the stress of the season but also a big contributor to trash and waste. Americans throw out 25 percent more garbage between Thanksgiving and Christmas and some of the trash includes new Christmas gifts. A little mindfulness during gift selection can not only help to reduce this waste but may also please the recipients more than that last-minute holiday tie purchase.  Healthy Experiences and Services to Start 2021 Self-Care Thrive Gift Card for a Facial or Massage (Gift cards for single services or packages) Organic Skin Care- Eminence- Check out the new Gemstone Collection or one of the Organic Skin Starter sets Facial at Home-Osmosis Pur Skincare at home...
