The Next Blockbuster Drug for Alzheimer’s Disease is Prevention

[caption id="attachment_4832" align="alignleft" width="300"] Dr. Nancy A. Palermo[/caption] Earlier this month the Food and Drug Administration approved the drug Aduhelm (scientific name aducanumab, pronounced add-you-can-you-mab) through its accelerated drug approval program. This is the first Alzheimer’s drug to pass through the FDA in over 18 years which should be a cause for celebration, but many researchers disagree. The drug, aducanumab, produced by the company Biogen, is an IV-infused antibody developed to reduce amyloid plaques in the brain of Alzheimer’s patients. Amyloid plaques are collections of the abnormal inflammatory amyloid protein known to be the hallmark of the disease. While the data from the clinical trials have still not been released, early indications suggest the drug appears to address just the symptoms and not the disease itself … sound familiar? Additionally,...

Why essential fatty acids are important to brain health

Most commonly found in fish, essential fatty acids play an important role in brain health and are the building blocks necessary for your body to function properly.   Many experts discuss the positive impact of these fats on the cardiovascular and immune systems, but essential fatty acids impact neurocognitive health as well.   Essential Fatty Acids and Brain Health Essential Fatty Acids are vital to brain health from conception into old age. The addition of this fat in the diets of pregnant women led to higher IQ and cognitive abilities in infants. It also was found to improve the vision of newborns. But the benefits don’t apply only to pregnancy.   Essential Fatty Acids can slow cognitive decline, improve vision, and are essential to normal brain functioning at any age. A 2018...

Breath Practice: Mental Health Awareness

[caption id="attachment_4834" align="alignleft" width="300"] By: Dr. Scott Greenapple[/caption] Some of the most chronic and debilitating diseases that affect most North Americans if not all populations can be greatly helped with something as simple as the breath. By changing the pattern of your breath, you can get almost instantaneous changes in your physical and emotional well-being. With deep breaths and longer exhalations. Your body starts to increase and decrease certain neurotransmitters and hormones that have positive effects on your overall well-being.  In the most basic sense, just by changing your breath to one that involves more of the diaphragm, a large muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen, we can shift the body into more of the parasympathetic response of the autonomic nervous system.  The parasympathetic system is...

It’s Not All in Your Head – Unraveling the Root Causes of Anxiety and Depression

Dr. Nancy A. Palermo “The greatest medicine of all is teaching people how not to need it. “Hippocrates It is estimated that over 44 million Americans suffer from mental disease and half of all adults will struggle with mental illness during their lifetime. Depression and anxiety are the most common diagnoses. Women are twice as likely as men to be diagnosed. One in seven women are medicated for depression and anxiety and 1out of 4 are on a medication by the time they reach their forties. Conventional approaches to mental disease focus on imbalances of neurotransmitters with treatment involving medications to increase or decrease the abnormalities. For decades we have been led to believe this chemical imbalance was the cause of psychiatric disease and medicine, the only solution. While there...

Grilled Mediterranean Chicken Kebobs

Grilled Mediterranean Chicken Kebobs Summer is right around the corner and it's time to start thinking about healthy grilling! This recipe is one of my favorites. It's full of flavor, and healthy natural herbs. Don't be afraid to modify, one of my favorite adds to this recipe is to add a big bunch of German Thyme to the marinade. Adding simple cucumber tzatziki is a nice way to add some fresh flavor to this recipe. Give it a try this weekend!
