Takeout-Style Beef and Broccoli

Takeout can feel convenient, but it often comes with hidden costs, excess calories, added sugars, seed oils, and packaging that introduces unnecessary waste and microplastics into our environment and bodies.

This Beef and Broccoli recipe delivers the same savory, satisfying flavors you expect from your favorite Chinese takeout spot, but with cleaner ingredients and better balance. Best of all, it comes together in about the same time it takes to place an order, no delivery fees required.

Ingredients

  • ½ lb grass-fed beef top round, thinly sliced
  • 1 lb broccoli crowns, cut into florets
  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • ½ cup low-sodium broth
  • 1 tablespoon dry sherry or rice wine
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch, divided (no-GMO preferred)
  • 1 tablespoon organic sesame oil or avocado oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced

Directions

  1. Prepare the beef.
In a bowl, toss the sliced beef with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch until evenly coated. Set aside.
  2. Make the sauce.
In a separate bowl, whisk together oyster sauce, broth, soy sauce, honey, sherry, and the remaining 1 tablespoon cornstarch. Set aside.
  3. Cook the beef.
Heat oil in a large skillet or wok over medium heat. Add beef and cook quickly until just cooked through. Remove from the pan and transfer to a plate.
  4. Build flavor.
In the same pan, add ginger and garlic. Cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
  5. Add broccoli.
Add broccoli florets and cook for about 3 minutes, stirring frequently until bright green and slightly tender.
  6. Finish the dish.
Return beef to the pan. Pour in the sauce mixture and stir continuously until the sauce thickens and coats everything evenly, about 1 minute.
  7. Serve immediately.
Enjoy on its own or over brown rice, cauliflower rice, or quinoa.

Recipe Tips

  • Slice beef against the grain for the most tender texture.
  • Keep the pan hot and cook quickly to avoid overcooking the beef.
  • Add a splash of broth if the sauce thickens too quickly.

Why This Recipe Works

  • Balanced protein and fiber for steady energy
  • Lower sugar and healthier fats than takeout versions
  • Minimal ingredients with maximum flavor
  • Ready in under 30 minutes
