Motivation: Know Your Numbers: Why Biomarkers Matter for Longevity
When we talk about longevity, it’s tempting to focus on the latest supplement, diet, or wellness trend. But understanding your long-term health often starts somewhere much simpler: knowing your numbers.
In this week’s Motivation, Dr. Palermo discusses biomarkers and why looking beyond how you feel today can provide important insight into your overall health.
Biomarkers can help us better understand what is happening inside the body—from metabolic and cardiovascular health to inflammation, hormone balance, and nutrient status. Tracking these markers over time can also help identify trends and give you and your healthcare provider information to make more informed decisions about your health.

What Are Biomarkers?
A biomarker is a measurable indicator that provides information about a biological process or health condition.
Many familiar laboratory values are biomarkers. Examples include blood glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, thyroid markers, and certain measures of inflammation.
Depending on your individual health history and goals, your healthcare provider may look at biomarkers related to:
- Metabolic health and blood sugar regulation
- Cardiovascular health
- Inflammation
- Hormone function
- Thyroid function
- Nutrient status
- Liver and kidney function
The value isn’t simply in collecting more data. It’s in understanding which numbers matter, what they mean in the context of your health, and how they change over time.
Biomarkers and Longevity
Longevity isn’t simply about living longer. The goal is to maintain health, function, and quality of life for as long as possible.
That’s where biomarkers can be particularly useful.
Some changes in metabolic or cardiovascular health can develop long before you notice obvious symptoms. Appropriate laboratory testing can provide another layer of information to help you and your healthcare team evaluate risk factors, monitor changes, and determine when lifestyle or medical interventions may be appropriate.
Rather than waiting until something feels wrong, understanding your biomarkers can help make health conversations more proactive and personalized.
Your Numbers Are Only Part of the Picture
It’s also important not to look at a single laboratory value in isolation.
Your age, medical history, medications, family history, symptoms, lifestyle, and changes in results over time all provide important context.
A number that appears outside a laboratory’s reference range does not automatically indicate disease, just as a result within the reference range does not necessarily tell the complete story.
The goal is to turn data into meaningful information you can use with your healthcare provider.
