Motivation: Mastering the Plank

This week’s Motivation continues Thrive’s Summer Challenge with another simple but highly effective exercise: the plank.

Harlee Palmer, PA, and Alan demonstrate several plank variations and modifications, making this foundational exercise accessible to all fitness levels. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to build endurance, the challenge is simple:

Start with 20 seconds and gradually work your way up to holding a plank for 2 minutes.

Progress doesn’t happen overnight, but with consistency, you’ll be surprised by what your body can achieve.

Why the Plank Is So Effective

The plank may look simple, but it is one of the most efficient full-body exercises you can perform.

Unlike exercises that isolate a single muscle group, the plank requires your entire body to work together to maintain proper alignment.

When performed correctly, it strengthens:

  • Your core and abdominal muscles
  • Shoulders and upper back
  • Chest and arms
  • Glutes and hips
  • Legs and stabilizing muscles

All of this without a single piece of equipment.

More Than Just Core Strength

While planks are known for building a stronger core, their benefits extend far beyond your midsection.

Regular plank training may help:

  • Improve posture
  • Enhance balance and stability
  • Support healthy movement patterns
  • Reduce the risk of lower back discomfort
  • Improve performance in everyday activities and exercise

A strong core provides the foundation for nearly every movement you make, from lifting groceries to playing with your children or improving athletic performance.

Start Where You Are

One of the best things about the plank is that it can be adapted for nearly everyone.

Harlee and Alan demonstrate modifications that allow you to build strength safely and progressively, including:

  • Incline planks
  • Knee planks
  • Traditional forearm planks
  • Full plank progressions

The goal isn’t to compare yourself to someone else’s starting point—it’s to improve your own.

Every extra five seconds is progress worth celebrating.
