Motivation: Summer Challenge: Build Strength One Push-Up at a Time
Summer is the perfect time to try something new, challenge yourself, and build healthy habits that last beyond the season.
In this week’s Motivation, Dr. Fletcher and Alan introduce Thrive’s first Summer Challenge: the push-up.
Whether you’re able to do one push-up or fifty, this challenge is designed to meet you where you are. By demonstrating several modifications and progressions, they show that the push-up is an exercise anyone can work toward regardless of age or fitness level.

Why the Push-Up?
The push-up is one of the most effective functional exercises because it engages multiple muscle groups simultaneously. It strengthens the:
- Chest
- Shoulders
- Triceps
- Core
- Upper back
- Stabilizing muscles throughout the body
More importantly, push-ups build the kind of strength we use in everyday life, helping improve posture, balance, and overall functional movement.
Start Where You Are
One of the biggest misconceptions about fitness is that every exercise has to look the same for everyone.
That’s simply not true.
Dr. Fletcher and Alan demonstrate several variations that allow you to safely build strength over time, including:
- Wall push-ups for beginners
- Incline push-ups using a bench or countertop
- Knee push-ups
- Traditional floor push-ups
- More advanced progressions for those looking for an extra challenge
The goal isn’t perfection; it’s progress.
Small Improvements Add Up
Like many aspects of health, strength is built through consistency.
Doing a few push-ups several times each week can gradually improve muscle endurance, stability, and confidence. As your strength grows, you’ll likely find yourself progressing naturally to more challenging variations.
Every repetition is a step toward becoming stronger.
