Dermaplaning 101
Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation commonly offered in many skincare spas.
It can be used alone or alongside other skin services. It is important a licensed esthetician performs the procedure. During this procedure, the esthetician uses a small stainless steel surgical blade to scrape the top layer of skin from the face. This process removes the build-up of the layer of dead skin cells and will reveal a much smoother, brighter complexion. It can also eliminate the fine hairs on the face, known as villus (commonly referred to as “peach fuzz).
While the procedure does require a sharp blade and may seem intimidating, it is typically painless and gentle. The benefits include smoother skin, a glowing complexion, and an overall improved skin texture. This procedure can also help to reduce the appearance of acne scars. Many clients are shocked at the day and night difference in the skin after this procedure.
Because dermaplaning removes the dead layer of skin cells that may not be removed with facial scrubs or peels, it can also be paired with serum infusions and masks to achieve noticeable benefits.
During the procedure, the esthetician first cleanses the skin thoroughly, removing any makeup, products, or superficial dirt. This helps to prepare the skin for the procedure. Following a cleanse, the esthetician will use an antiseptic or medical-grade solution to remove any superficial bacteria on the skin.
The blade is held at a 45-degree angle, and working carefully in sections, the esthetician moves carefully back and forth over the skin. The movements are small and superficial and are carried out while holding the skin taut. The most common areas treated include the forehead, around the eyes, in between the eyebrows, the nose, cheeks, chin, and upper lip. Often, the jawline is included in the process as well.
Benefits include immediate exfoliation and improved texture of the skin.
Another immediate benefit of removing dead skin cells and peach fuzz is the improved penetration of skincare products. They will absorb faster and deeper. This is why, following the procedure, the service is then completed with a serum infusion and advanced moisturizer. When complete, the skin will be radiant and glowing. The good news is the absorption and benefits of skincare products will continue after the procedure. The best part of dermaplaning is that there is no downtime or recovery period. The products will remain on your skin overnight, and the next day, you can proceed with your normal skin care regimen.
This procedure can easily be added to any Thrive facial or skin infusion treatment. To achieve maximal benefits, it can be repeated every 4-6 weeks.
