Jewelry and Skin Rashes: What You Need to Know
Skin rashes are among the most common reasons people seek medical attention, and jewelry is often an overlooked trigger.
Many people have multiple body piercings and can be exposed to metals such as nickel, cadmium, chromium, copper, and cobalt.
One of the most common causes of rashes from jewelry is a nickel allergy.
Nickel is often mixed with other metals to create alloys used in jewelry. When it comes in contact with the skin, it can trigger an allergic reaction, known as allergic contact dermatitis, resulting in a red, itchy rash, blisters, or even swelling. Some people might be allergic to other metals used in jewelry, such as cobalt or chromium, though this is less common than nickel allergy.
The rash is most often in the area of exposure, but prolonged exposure can cause rashes in areas not in contact with the jewelry. You might not react to the first piercing, but symptoms may start with each additional piercing. Eyelid rashes are associated with this sensitivity because we frequently touch our eyes, and the irritant gets trapped in the fold of the eyelid.
Jewelry can irritate the skin by rubbing against it, especially in areas like the neck, wrists, and ears, where movement is frequent.
The constant friction can disrupt the skin barrier, causing irritation, redness, and discomfort. Allergies and sensitivities are not always limited to the skin. Sometimes a metal allergy can be severe enough to cause digestive issues, fatigue and headaches. Repeated exposure can increase the chance of having more systemic issues.
Foods such as legumes, seafood, grains, chocolate can have high nickel content depending on the soil.
If you are having a skin issue due to metal, you may also have a cross-reactivity response to food.

The simplest way to prevent jewelry allergies is to avoid items made with nickel or the other metals mentioned above. Look for sterling silver, stainless steel, and gold. If you have skin or digestive issues and are unsure about your jewelry, remove those pieces to see if symptoms improve.
