Thai Fish Cakes
These Thai fish cakes are easy to make at home.
This recipe combines white fish, shrimp, and flavorful seasonings for a tasty dish sure to impress. We used snapper and grouper, but any white fish, like cod, will work just as well. Be sure to check out our upcoming Fish Without Fear cooking class, where we’ll showcase recipes like this one!
Ingredients for Thai Fish Cakes:
- ½ lb. large shrimp, peeled and cut into 3-4 pieces
- 2 (3-oz) filets of white fish (snapper, grouper, or cod)
- ½ cup cooked brown rice
- ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- ½ small red onion, chopped
- 1 tsp Tom Yum paste
- 1 tsp fish sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup panko bread crumbs (use gluten-free if needed)
- 1-2 tbsp sesame oil, for frying
Ingredients for the Sauce:
- ¼ cup plain full-fat yogurt
- 1 tbsp lime juice
- 2 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped
- 1 tsp rice vinegar
- ¼ tsp granulated brown sugar
- 1 tsp sriracha
- ½ tsp salt
Instructions:
- Prepare the Fish Mixture:
- Cut the fish filets into cubes and place them in a food processor with the shrimp pieces. Process until smooth and no chunks remain.
- Transfer the fish and shrimp mixture into a bowl. Add the cooked brown rice, chopped cilantro, minced garlic, chopped red onion, Tom Yum paste, fish sauce, and the egg. Season with salt and pepper.
- Mix all the ingredients together with a fork until well combined.
- Form the Fish Cakes:
- Scoop about ½ cup of the fish mixture and form it into a patty.
- Roll the patty in panko bread crumbs, coating it well. Repeat for the remaining mixture.
- Cook the Fish Cakes:
- Heat a pan over medium heat and add 1-2 tablespoons of sesame oil.
- Fry the fish cakes until golden brown on both sides, carefully flipping them to avoid burning.
- Make the Sauce:
- In a small bowl, mix the yogurt, lime juice, cilantro, rice vinegar, brown sugar, sriracha, and salt.
- Serve:
- Each fish cake should be topped with a lime slice, drizzled with the sauce, and garnished with a cilantro twig.
