What is a Health Coach?
by Shelley Butler, Integrative Nutrition Health Coach
Thrive offers Health Coaching as one of its many wellness services.
Many people wonder what a Health Coaching appointment looks like, and how it could help them on their journey towards true health and wellness. A Thrive health coach is someone with experience and knowledge that can help get you to a greater achievement level than you could on your own.
Health coaching is about taking recommendations given by a practitioner or other professional, and helping the client to implement them into their day-to-day life.
The process allows each client’s individual story to unfold. The Health Coach will help them see their uniqueness, and help address the issues at hand – such as weight loss (or weight gain in some cases), digestive issues, sleep issues, life balance with career or personal issues, self care, time management, meal/snack planning.
Working with a Health Coach is about figuring out what led them to their current place in life.
Understanding where they want to be, and helping them get there through a safe, nurturing space where they feel comfortable. This is what ultimately leads to long-term results!
Long-term results take time and effort. Which is why multiple sessions, spread out over time, are most effective.
Before their first visit a patient fills out a Health History Intake Form. This gives the Coach an idea of what they are trying to accomplish, and gives the Coach an idea of their current state of health and wellness.
The first visit will be about exploring HOW they got to where they are. We spend time getting to know one another and building a trusting relationship.
You will leave each session with actionable steps that you can take to start tackling your short-term goals.
Clients are encouraged to email any progress, or challenges they face between sessions. During the next visits we keep exploring the issues, use accountability to see if a goal (or goals) since the last visit has been achieved, and try and dig into what may be holding the person back.
It is like putting together pieces of a puzzle, and the Health Coach provides understanding, motivation, teaching, listening and compassion – all while using holistic and integrative methodologies.
