The Outcome of Functional Medicine Residency Increases

The Outcome of Functional Medicine Residency Increases   More than 400 practitioners have received Functional Medicine training through the Tallahassee Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program (FMRP).  Approximately twenty of these practitioners have also received training at IFM’s Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP) course.  With that being said, this partnership has resulted in the successful treatment of more than 1,000 patients since 2011.   In the fall of 2016, FMRP implemented an ongoing 16-week cardiometabolic medical visit program.  Each week, 12 patients attend a two-hour program to learn about lifestyle, making healthy choices, and coping with emotions.  Meanwhile, these patients rotate through 15-minute clinical appointments with a practitioner and a shadow resident.   This program is beneficial for both practitioners and patients: practitioners are able to integrate Functional Medicine into their...

Why to Consider an Independent Primary Care Physician

Independent Primary Care Physicians   Patients have been comforted into a costly daze allowing reimbursement policies to govern their decisions in managing their health.  Meanwhile, reliant on reimbursement revenue for survival, physicians may continuously reshape care delivery to mirror the ever-shifting values of payers.   This period of medicine is drawing quickly to a close.  As consumers shoulder the growing burden of healthcare costs, America is waking up to the reality of an apparent oxymoron.  With deductibles ballooning to thousands of dollars, most working-age Americans are now insured, self-pay patients.   For primary care physicians, in particular, this new reality creates an extremely important for in the road. Consumers hate the old, payer-driven model of primary care.  Now that they are footing the bill, they will seek out and buy what...

Under Pressure: The Hypertension Effect

Under Pressure While everyone has pressure in their lives, some are under far more severe pressure than others. High blood pressure (hypertension) is a condition in which the stress that your blood exerts on the interior of your blood vessels is significant enough to pose potential health risks over the long term. Hypertension can present in a variety of ways, and many have no symptomology at all. Hypertension Symptoms Headaches Shortness of breath Nosebleeds It is important to note that none of these can point directly to hypertension, but if the pressure is severe enough to have symptoms, it can mean that the pressure is elevated enough to pose significant risk. Luckily, a hypertension diagnosis can be as simple as taking your blood pressure! Blood pressure should be...

Are You Suffering From Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)?

Are You Suffering From RA? Rheumatoid arthritis, commonly known as RA, is an autoimmune disorder that causes chronic inflammation in your joints. As an autoimmune disorder, it is due to your bodies immune system mistakenly attacking its own tissue. Compared to osteoarthritis, which is usually due to normal wear-and-tear on your body, RA directly affects the lining of your joints, causing swelling that can become painful and even result in deformity and erosion of bone. Despite its significant effect on, and therefore association with, joints, RA can also affect multiple other body systems. These alternatively involved systems can cause symptoms that may not generally be associated with RA. Other Involved Body Systems and Associated Symptoms Skin - Rheumatoid nodules (small lumps under the skin over bony areas) ...

IBD vs IBS

IBD vs IBS Despite many people suffering from either IBD or IBS, there is some confusion between the two. Irritable bowel syndrome, IBS, is the less severe of the two conditions, affecting the mainly the colon or rectum. It is non-life-threatening and does not increase one's risk of other more serious conditions such as colitis, Crohn's disease, or colon cancer. It is important to note that bleeding or black stool is not a symptom of IBS. Irritable bowel disease, IBD, is generally considered to be more severe and refers to a variety of bowel-related diseases including Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and others. IBD Diseases Crohn's disease Ulcerative colitis Enteritis Ileitis Proctitis Crohn's Disease Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammation of the bowel that can even cause ulceration. Crohn's...

What is IBS?

What is IBS? Irritable Bowel Syndrome, more commonly known as IBS, is an illness that gets thrown around a lot nowadays, but it's not something that is well understood. IBS affects the large intestine and, while fairly common, does not always present with significant symptoms. This, combined with the fact that symptoms can often be managed with changes in diet, lifestyle, and stress, is good news for the 10%-15% of the global population that suffers from the disease. IBS Symptoms Abdominal pain/cramping/bloating that is typically relieved with a bowel movement Increased gas passing Alternating constipation and diarrhea Mucusy stool Luckily, while these symptoms are obviously never fun, having IBS does not affect the tissue of the bowel or increase one's risk for colon cancer. Diagnosing IBS While there is...

Why Time Affects Patient Satisfaction

Are you spending less time with your provider? You’re not alone. Average time spent with doctors is decreasing. Many people are turning to Independent Practices like Thrive Wellness to receive the personalized care they deserve. Online medical resource Medscape released its 2016 Physicians Compensation Report. It features data from more than 19,200 doctors in 25 specialties. More importantly it includes information on how many minutes (on average) doctors say they spend with each patient. The most common answer reported was between 13 and 16 minutes. Patient satisfaction increases when doctors spend more time with them. Thrive Wellness spends up to 1 hour in the initial consultation and is focused on making a difference with patient satisfaction. This often means increasing our time spent with patients. In August 2017, we conducted a...
