Breast Cancer Prevention

Breast Cancer Awareness…Prevention by Dr. Nancy Palermo Lietz, MD Unless you’ve had your head in the sand you know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During the month of October it is impossible to avoid articles that highlight Breast Cancer and the inordinate number of women who suffer every minute with the diagnosis of this  feared disease. It is said this “awareness” has only added fear without making any measurable difference in the disease.  In Preventative Medicine magazine 80% of women state they are moderately or very afraid of the diagnosis of breast cancer and rate this as one of their greatest fears. Despite these fears, the reality is 90% of women will never get this diagnosis. Breast Cancer Awareness month was established in 1985 by...

Autumn: The Harvest and Letting Go

Dr. Scott Greenapple In traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) we look at seasons and consider them as elements. With each change of the season, there are elements and meridians that correspond.  We look at the meridians and elements and how they tend to have a direct correlation to both the physical and emotional aspects of our lives. We are now going from the relaxed carefree world of summer to the more serious and introspective energies that are associated with autumn. Fall is the metal element and the meridians involved are the lungs and the large intestine. This is the time of year for organization and setting boundaries.  Finish up projects you have started in spring and summer.  Focus on internal and cultivate your body-mind practice becoming more introspective.  The...

Toxins and Fish: Safe Food Guidelines

Fish and Toxins: Safe Food Guidelines One of the healthiest food choices we can make is to eat fish. Besides being a source of low-fat and high-quality protein, fish is also a rich source of vital nutrients such as vitamin D —a nutrient that many people are deficient in. Fish is also rich in calcium, phosphorus, and other minerals such as iron, zinc, iodine, magnesium, and potassium. Fatty types of fish are considered the healthiest because they are particularly good sources of vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for your body and brain to function optimally and are strongly linked to a reduced risk of many diseases. Unfortunately, environmental pollutants such as dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can accumulate in foods, including fish.  Some...

Medicinal Mushrooms [caption id="attachment_4410" align="alignleft" width="371"] Image Courtesy of Kikkoman[/caption] At Thrive, we are always trying to motivate our clients to get in the kitchen and cook. Cooking at home is the best way to control your diet and optimize the ingredients that enter your body. As more nutritional data is released, there is clear support for the medicinal benefits of food. Nutritional studies support an Anti-Inflammatory Whole Food Plant-based diet rich in fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, legumes and organic meats in small amounts. This diet is consistent with a Mediterranean diet but includes the foods of many other cultures for diversity and benefits. One of the best ways to keep yourself motivated is to introduce new foods and ingredients to keep your diet exciting. Cooked Asian mushrooms...
