Want a Receipt With That? No Thanks!

Just say no to the paper receipt. By: Shelley Butler The last time you went to the mall, did the salesclerk ask you if you wanted your receipt handed to you, in the bag, or emailed to you? Your first thought may be to grab the receipt and shove it in your purse or pocket.  Think twice before doing this again.  There is an important reason to forgo the printed receipt altogether, unless absolutely necessary. Thermal Paper Thermal papers used to print cash register, airline, restaurant, gas station and ATM receipts contain a potentially dangerous chemical called bisphenol A (BPA).  In fact, 40% of all retail receipts are coated in BPA. BPA You may have heard of BPA in plastics, baby bottles (which has recently been banned by the FDA), and as...

Winter: Staying Healthy with Acupuncture and the Elements

In winter, nature seems to be at rest. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the element associated with winter is water and the two meridians and organs associated with the water element are the kidneys and the bladder.  The kidneys and the bladder control water metabolism and maintain homeostasis.  Earth is made up of 75% water and approximately 60% of our body weight is water. With aging, we tend to lose water. Our bodies become less flexible, our skin loses it elasticity, and bones become more brittle as does our hair.  Even our minds become less flexible.  With traditional Chinese medicine, we have many physical, mental and nutritional tools to help restore and replenish the water we lose. Our Kidneys The kidney’s control and stabilize blood pressure, filter and eliminate fluid...

Gargle Your Way to Good Health

by Shelley Butler, Integrative Nutrition Health Coach I have a self care tip for you that you may want to add to your daily routine, and it's basically free! Try gargling!  It may be something you do when you feel like you are coming down with a sore throat, but gargling has other health benefits you may not know about. Gargling stimulates the vagus nerve, which is the nerve that connects the brain to the gut.  It sits right next to the jugular vein.  The vagus nerve is responsible for motility in the intestines, which helps "move" your bowels.  If you suffer from constipation or poor digestion, you may want to consider stimulating the vagus nerve.  The vagus nerve also helps release stomach acid and digestive enzymes, helps...

Why Time Affects Patient Satisfaction

Are you spending less time with your provider? You’re not alone. Average time spent with doctors is decreasing. Many people are turning to Independent Practices like Thrive Wellness to receive the personalized care they deserve. Online medical resource Medscape released its 2016 Physicians Compensation Report. It features data from more than 19,200 doctors in 25 specialties. More importantly it includes information on how many minutes (on average) doctors say they spend with each patient. The most common answer reported was between 13 and 16 minutes. Patient satisfaction increases when doctors spend more time with them. Thrive Wellness spends up to 1 hour in the initial consultation and is focused on making a difference with patient satisfaction. This often means increasing our time spent with patients. In August 2017, we conducted a...

Breast Cancer Prevention

Breast Cancer (Awareness)…Prevention Unless you’ve had your head in the sand you know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During the month of October it is impossible to avoid articles that highlight Breast Cancer and the inordinate number of women who suffer every minute with the diagnosis of this  feared disease. It is said this “awareness” has only added fear without making any measurable difference in the disease.  In Preventative Medicine magazine 80% of women state they are moderately or very afraid of the diagnosis of breast cancer and rate this as one of their greatest fears. Despite these fears, the reality is 90% of women will never get this diagnosis. Breast Cancer Awareness month was established in 1985 by AstraZeneca, the pharmaceutical company responsible...
