Thriving to Be Optimal – Let 2022 be your year of Self-Care

Elevate your Mind and Body. Elevate your Health. Elevate Your Life By: Nancy Palermo, MD Why do we all feel such discontent? We keep searching for our outlook and situation to improve and blindly look to those around us to make the world better yet are often left feeling deprived-the victim with no control stuck in a hole with no way out. We blame others for failing us and not living up to our expectations. Our family, our leaders, and our friends cannot get us out of the hole. Why can they not fix the situation? What we fail to see is that change is only within our own control. As we come to the end of 2021 (happily for many of us) we tend to think of the new year and...

A Mindful Christmas Gift List – The Gift of Health

[caption id="attachment_4832" align="alignleft" width="300"] Dr. Nancy Palermo[/caption] By: Dr. Nancy Palermo If the last two years had shown us anything it is that wellness must be a way of life. The pandemic has reminded us that our health must be a priority. Data shows that 94% of those individuals who were hospitalized and diet of COVID had comorbidities like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease and unfortunately this virus is not going away soon. These facts may be the best reason to give gifts for self-care and wellness this year. Your friends and family will thank you and will be appreciative to get a gift that will put them on the right path to health in 2022. We wanted to help you with your Christmas shopping by putting together a...

Mindful Holiday Health Tips

[caption id="attachment_4832" align="alignleft" width="300"] Nancy A. Palermo MD[/caption] By: Nancy A. Palermo MD   The holiday season can be difficult for anyone trying to make healthy choices. With the added time constraints, many of us struggle with getting in exercise, maintaining healthy sleep habits, or limiting the intake of processed and sugary foods that abound at this time of the year. The added burdens of 2020-2021 - COVID, political and social stressors-have cracked our resolve and discipline even more. Many will be entering the holiday season with some extra padding. The pandemic lockdown has introduced bad habits into our everyday life. Many of us are entering the 2021 holiday season with an extra 10-20 pounds and still blaming it on COVID. Americans already gain an average of 5 -10 pounds...

We’re Nuts about staying Healthy – Here’s Why

Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t. Nuts are a great way to get a dose of heart-healthy fat, as well as a mix of valuable vitamins and minerals.  The National Center for Biomedical Information states that “by virtue of their unique composition, they are likely to beneficially impact health outcomes.”  Research suggest that regular nut consumption is unlikely to contribute to obesity and may even help in weight loss!  But that doesn’t mean that you should eat handful after handful.  Instead (like most things), moderation is key. Ideally, a serving  should be about the size of a golf ball. All nuts are not created equal. Many are high in fat content. They are one of the natural plant foods richest in fat.  Nuts are beneficial because...

Breast Cancer Awareness…Prevention

It is impossible to miss the pink ribbons that decorate the month of October. As you know October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. For many women, breast cancer is their most feared disease. The overwhelming “awareness” of the disease which was meant to encourage screenings has only added fear for many women. In Preventative Medicine magazine, 80% of women state they are moderately or very afraid of the diagnosis of breast cancer and rate this as one of their greatest fears. Despite these fears, the reality is 90% of women will never get this diagnosis. Breast Cancer Awareness month was established in 1985 by AstraZeneca, the pharmaceutical company responsible for the development of Tamoxifen and Arimidez, common chemotherapy agents used in the treatment of breast cancer. In the...

Laughter can be the best medicine, particularly during a Pandemic

The last 18 months have been a challenge for all of us in ways we are still understanding. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic left many feeling like victims, powerless against this deadly virus. We became dependent on a government and a healthcare system that used fear to drive our decisions. The exposure of CNN Technical Director Charlie Chester’s death toll ticker was formulated to keep people in fear and to drive up ratings by keeping people glued to the TV. There was no compassion. His explanation? “If it bleeds it leads”. The government and healthcare system have also driven the learned helplessness and victim mentality with promises to “Save the Day” with a vaccine and government funding which will miraculously get us out of the pandemic. Here...

Why prescription sleep aids are not a long term solution

According to the CDC, one in three Americans has trouble getting the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep a night. While getting enough sleep is integral to your health, one of the most common solutions might be doing more harm than good. Prescription sleep medicine is commonly prescribed to patients who have trouble sleeping, but it’s not helpful in the long run. The Harm of Long-Term Use Prescription sleep medicine might be okay to use short-term, but side effects become more dangerous the longer it’s used. Depending on the prescription, side effects can range from changes in appetite, daytime drowsiness, and heartburn to memory problems, stomach pain, and uncontrollable shaking in the body. Some prescription sleep medicines can be addictive along with harmful side effects if used for an extended...

The Next Blockbuster Drug for Alzheimer’s Disease is Prevention

[caption id="attachment_4832" align="alignleft" width="300"] Dr. Nancy A. Palermo[/caption] Earlier this month the Food and Drug Administration approved the drug Aduhelm (scientific name aducanumab, pronounced add-you-can-you-mab) through its accelerated drug approval program. This is the first Alzheimer’s drug to pass through the FDA in over 18 years which should be a cause for celebration, but many researchers disagree. The drug, aducanumab, produced by the company Biogen, is an IV-infused antibody developed to reduce amyloid plaques in the brain of Alzheimer’s patients. Amyloid plaques are collections of the abnormal inflammatory amyloid protein known to be the hallmark of the disease. While the data from the clinical trials have still not been released, early indications suggest the drug appears to address just the symptoms and not the disease itself … sound familiar? Additionally,...

The black rice is packed with nutrients that you do not get when using white or whole-grain rice. The shitake mushrooms pack a meaty punch that replicates a texture you often find in a stir fry dish and the dressing is a perfect combination of salty and sweet that is sure to make you come back for seconds.
