Below is our refreshed list of summer dos and don’ts to help you feel your best in the months ahead. Don’t Put on Sunscreen… At least not for the first 15–20 minutes of sun exposure. Over 80% of Americans remain vitamin D deficient, often due to overuse of sunscreen and avoidance of sunlight. Vitamin D plays a critical role in immune function, mood regulation, inflammation control, bone health, and even cancer prevention. Your body naturally produces vitamin D through sun exposure, specifically from...

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Dr. Scott Greenapple May has been deemed Mental Health Awareness Month. In this article, I will combine some thoughts and theories and offer “tools” to help people become aware and educated. I will also offer some guidance for you or anyone you may know who suffers from this disease. Mental health issues are on the rise at alarming rates. Many theories are being studied and observed as to the reasons. Some of the most obvious stem from political unrest in this country and the world; the constant reality of war, poverty, climate change, financial struggle, and the barrage of news from social media are certainly at the top of reasonings. And, of course, the more personal ones such as family dynamics-dysfunction, trauma, genetics, chronic disease, pain, inter and...

Traditional Italian Handmade Pasta & Red Sauce

I booked a traditional Italian cooking class on a recent trip to Italy and  was impressed with how simple and tasty their staple dishes were to prepare.   The first weekend home from my trip, I decided to test this theory and see if I could replicate a simple handmade pasta dish for the kids; they were as pleased as I was with it. Plan for an hour of prep work and make extra sauce to freeze. If you do not have a pasta rack (to dry), you can improvise with a broom or coat hangers. Give it a try, and let us know what you think! Italian Hand-Made Pasta Ingredients: 400 grams (about 15 oz) White 00 flour (all-purpose) 4 big eggs (room temperature) Directions: Pour the flour on...

Whole Health Spring Cleaning

As the flowers bloom and the weather turns warmer, we come out of the winter hibernation and tackle spring cleaning. Nearly 8 out of 10 Americans practice spring cleaning regularly. While clearing up the clutter and the pollen is important this is a great time to clear up some of the unhealthy practices, we allowed in during the winter months. We must tackle these “chores” mindfully to embrace true self-care. Do not think of them as obligatory but rather empowering and liberating. Reducing clutter and unhealthy habits can be beneficial for our mental health and our physical health. Let’s try to embrace this mindset while we tackle the physical jobs. Spring cleaning, like many resets, can be referred to as a “temporal landmark”. These are the times in our...
