The Misunderstood Egg

Recently, while reviewing a patient’s labs in the office, I was shocked when she proclaimed her primary physician told her she needed to stop eating eggs because it was raising her cholesterol. I was surprised to hear that someone was still giving this advice. I know some in the lay population have not gotten the memo, but I was surprised a physician would still be that misinformed. Unfortunately, I continue to hear this advice from patients: “To reduce your cholesterol, eat fewer eggs and eat less meat.” There has been a lot of misinformation about eggs. Hopefully, this article will help to straighten things out. First, I thought I would share some fun facts about eggs to keep this light, and then I will get into all the...

The Undeniable Health Benefits of a Plant-based Diet

By Nancy Palermo Lietz, MD “The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will instruct his patient in the care of the human frame in diet and the cause and prevention of diseases. “ Thomas Edison Americans have an obsession with nutrition, diet, and weight loss. Countless books on the subjects hit the bestseller list, only to be replaced by the next publication in print. It should be no surprise that Dr. Colin Campbell’s book, The China Study, quickly hit the bestseller list. His epidemiologic project demonstrated thousands of associations between dietary factors and disease. The most relevant finding, however, was that those individuals who ate the most animal-based foods had the most chronic disease. More importantly, his findings launched thousands of studies in nutrition that...

8 Tips for Healthy Grilling

Take your cooking outdoors this summer and grill delicious meals with fewer health risks. By Camille Berry | Experience Life |May 12, 2023 I'm firing up the grill as soon as it is warm enough for shorts and sandals. I love to hear the sweet song of sizzling brats and burgers, to smell the air rich with hickory, and to watch the licks of flame leap up. Sure, it makes a hot day even hotter, but that’s part of the fun of this time-honored summer tradition. Maybe you can’t get enough carne asada, boast of your barbecue skills, or are committed to an annual Fourth of July cookout. Whatever your menu, a summertime grill session is a glorious way to celebrate the season. But it’s not all sunshine and fun when it...

Our Diets Are Killing Us And Doctors Aren’t Trained To Help

This article was first featured in The Hill. It was written by Emily M. Broad Lieb, Drs. Stephen DeVries and Walter Willet What if your doctor failed to talk to you about the most important threat to your health? Wouldn't you worry about the quality of your health care? A poor quality diet is a leading cause of death in the United States, but it is unlikely that your doctor has the knowledge even to begin a meaningful conversation about your nutrition or to make an appropriate dietary referral. Most doctors lack the knowledge necessary to offer patients nutrition advice; fewer than 14 percent of physicians report feeling equipped to advise on a diet or the connection between food and health. This is unsurprising given that, for example,...

Heart Healthy Foods

A recent study (August 1, 2022) in The American Journal of Cardiology shared some grim outlooks with respect to cardiovascular diseases in the U.S. Based on current trends; the journal article predicted the four biggest contributors to heart disease would all increase significantly by 2060 with a prediction of diabetes to rise by 39.3%, dyslipidemia, (elevated lipids) by 27.6%, hypertension by 25% and obesity by 18%. The biggest increases were seen in predicted elevations in stroke, heart failure, and heart attack; all predicted to be at levels over 30%. The increases were seen mostly in the female and ethnic/minority populations. While equitable access to healthcare is involved in the equation to tackle these increases, the primary focus needs to be on prevention with education on the...

What Exactly is Clean Eating?

[caption id="attachment_9894" align="alignleft" width="300"] Nancy A. Palermo MD[/caption] Clean eating is an important part of what we provide at Thrive is Functional Medicine. Functional Medicine is a completely different approach to symptoms and diseases. It aims to get to the root cause of the symptoms rather than cover them up with medication. When we talk about root causes we cannot proceed without discussing diet as it is such a foundational component of our health. When I first meet a patient at their Functional intake visit, we often discuss their diet. I would say that most of them say they eat clean and do not feel their diet is the cause of their issues. While this certainly might be true more than not, we can find some places where...

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar: Medical Miracle or Myth?

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a useful tool in the kitchen and can be used in anything from marinades to dressings to sauces. Recently this folk remedy has been touted to fight infections, manage stomach acid and indigestion, melt off body fat and manage skin conditions. ACV has been deemed a “cure-all, “and while this may be somewhat overstated, it clearly has been shown to have some merits. Apple cider vinegar is produced with the fermentation of crushed apples. The vinegar, raw and unfiltered (as it should be used), contains trace amounts of B vitamins, Vitamin C, and minerals like potassium and magnesium. The fermented product also contains some powerful antioxidants and flavonoids like gallic acid, catechin, caffei acid, and ferulic acid. The fermentation also produces beneficial...
