Thriving through the Holidays: Gifts of Health, Wellness and Generosity

Thriving through the Holidays: Gifts of Health, Wellness, and Generosity   The holiday season is marked by food, family and of course gifts. Gift-giving is not only a big contributor to the stress of the season but also a big contributor to trash and waste. Americans throw out 25 percent more garbage between Thanksgiving and Christmas and some of the trash includes new Christmas gifts. A little mindfulness during gift selection can not only help to reduce this waste but may also please the recipients more than that last-minute holiday tie purchase. Monday Motivation: Qi Gong and Breast Cancer – The Power of Movement

https://vimeo.com/369198809 All or most disease according to traditional Chinese medicine comes from blockage or stagnation of the body’s fluids, lymph flow, energy, breath, food, thoughts and emotional issues from the mind. All of these fall under the term “Qi” which is loosely translated as “life force, vapor, steam, and energy”. Most of the Chinese medicine is centered upon the movement and cultivation of our Qi, allowing the body to self-regulate, work in harmony and empower us to help strengthen our own immune response. The Power of A Second Opinion

The Power of A Second Opinion by Dr. Nancy Palermo Lietz, MD Caroline was a healthy 46 year old diagnosed with breast carcinoma in situ following a radiology biopsy done after an abnormal mammogram. As with many women, she was eager to proceed with treatment and was quickly referred to a surgeon through her primary care with no forethought or research on treatment options.  She was quickly scheduled for a lumpectomy and node biopsy only to find out a month later that the cancer was more advanced and she would require further surgery and treatment. A review of the pathology from the first surgery confirmed an invasive high-grade cancer that would have been better treated with mastectomy, chemotherapy and postoperative radiation. Performing the incorrect surgery only...

My Health and the Health of the Planet: Small Changes with Big Results

My Health and the Health of the Planet: Small Changes with Big Results Individual choice is a vote for your own health as well as the health of the planet. While we may wait years to get lawmakers to agree on what is best for the health of Americans and the health of the planet, you can start the process of change with the decisions you make at home. Real change may be a bottom-up venture. When Americans make decisions that affect economics, lawmakers and corporations will have to listen. Here are changes you can begin to adopt into your own lifestyle. Skip the plastic. Packaging in the form of plastic waste increases our non-biodegradable burden and loads landfills. The plastic then leaches into the environment exposing...

Quick and Easy Applesauce

We cooked pork chops last week and realized that we didn't have applesauce for the kids! After a quick Google search, we found this yummy recipe from EatingWell. It's simple, fast and best of all the girls wanted seconds. We plan on making it again this weekend! Ingredients 4 Apples 1 – 2 tablespoons of brown sugar Pinch of cinnamon (to taste) Directions Peel, core and dice up apples and place in a medium microwaveable bowl. Cover and microwave until softened, about 4 – 5 minutes. Carefully remove from microwave and transfer to a food processor, add brown sugar, cinnamon and puree until desired consistency. Good for up to one week refrigerated. Breast Cancer Prevention

Breast Cancer Awareness…Prevention by Dr. Nancy Palermo Lietz, MD Unless you’ve had your head in the sand you know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During the month of October it is impossible to avoid articles that highlight Breast Cancer and the inordinate number of women who suffer every minute with the diagnosis of this  feared disease. It is said this “awareness” has only added fear without making any measurable difference in the disease.  In Preventative Medicine magazine 80% of women state they are moderately or very afraid of the diagnosis of breast cancer and rate this as one of their greatest fears. Despite these fears, the reality is 90% of women will never get this diagnosis. Breast Cancer Awareness month was established in 1985 by...
